Apartment-ness
So last night I FINALLY picked up the curtains I've been eyeing at Target for a few months now. And I say "finally" because I've been so sick of looking at ugly white vertical blinds for the past 7 months. ;) (They're still there since we don't have storage space, but at least they're hidden!) You'll have to ignore the poor iphone picture quality - my camera is currently on it's way here because I left it at home in Arkansas last weekend. I'll be sure to post better pictures soon!
I noticed the other day that I couldn't find the curtains on Target.com anymore so I rushed to the store to get the last 2 packs! Eric was patient and kind enough to hang up the rod last night, too! AND, they're thermal! So hopefully that'll keep some of the cold air OUT!
Any thoughts? (Anyone can comment below - it's open to everyone! Hint hint!) I'm not seeing anything else on Target that I really like, but I need to shop around elsewhere, too. Of course the colors are a little off above - it should match much better in person.
And last week I came across this photo on a design blog. I kid you not, I'm seriously considering doing something like this for our front door because it's not completely sealed (you can see light from outside around all the sides at night if that tells you anything) and cold air is always getting in. From what I've Googled so far, this seems like a popular trend/solution in Europe:

TGIF!
For those of you that have been wondering about the chair, I'm one step away from having it done! I got the back, arms, and trim done last night. It's not perfect, and I probably didn't choose the best blue fabric (It's a silk-type fabric and cotton would have been better - I couldn't get it to tuck under well and there are a few little "wrinkles"), but I say it looks pretty darn good for my first upholstery job! I was actually able to see most of the office floor for the first time in almost a month after I was able to put away the 2 tool sets scattered about, glue, fabric swatches, stuffing, etc...that room has been quite a mess! :) Next is to clean up all the paint, brushes, and canvases scattered all over our dining room - I'm shipping out my big canvas order hopefully Monday so that'll all be picked up SOON! I think Eric's getting a little tired of me being a chaotic mess with all my projects. ;)
Here are some quick snaps I took this morning in the mean-time. I'm not quite ready to show the front yet. Hopefully I can pick up a sewing machine next week with a Michael's or Hobby Lobby coupon so I can do the cushion!
We're traveling to Fayetteville today in Eric's car since mine's still in the shop {I ended up having to go through insurance because of the $$ - hopefully it doesn't hurt our rates too bad when we renew our policy this summer}. Cross your fingers that the winter weather isn't a problem on Sunday! Ugh - so sick of this! It's not supposed to get above 30 all next week, too. Be looking for photos on Monday from the weekend! - I've been looking forward to this for quite some time! :) We've got my great aunt Carolyn in town from California and my second cousin Walt and his family who are currently living in Prague! It's going to be quite a party.
In other news, Eric is busy busy with grad school. He's taking 15 grad hours which basically equals 18 undergrad hours. Definitely more than a full load! He's been spending quite some time in the library, too. And, for those of you familiar with how strict college libraries can be with food/drink/talking, etc, the health sciences library here is no exception...
Eric walked in with this little coffee cup the other day:
He goes over to the counter and sets it down as he staples some papers. The strict man at the desk says "Sir, you're going to have to get rid of that cup." (The library only allows drinks with screw-top lids, and this guy is always getting on to Eric's friends for "talking too loud") Eric responds, "It's plastic and has a screw top lid..." The man looks at him funny and doesn't believe him, so Eric unscrews the top and proves it to him...the guy is flabbergasted. ;)
That was my little Valentine's gift to him - you can find them at Bed Bath and Beyond and they also come in pink! :)

Gotta Love it When...
...a trip home ends up costing you an arm and a leg.
The weekend was good until I got back into town yesterday. Unfortunately, I had completed the 5-hour drive and was 2 blocks from our apartment when I slid in the snow and skidded on top of a curb/median trying to turn right. Yet another reason as to why this winter needs to END! I'm so sick of it already. Thankfully, no other cars were around in that lane and there wasn't any bumper damage, but now I'm finding out I need 2 new parts and a new set of tires (at least I already knew the tires were needing to be replaced sometime soon).
So here's the new cost of a trip to Fayetteville in the winter...
Gas: $45
Meals with Friends: $25
Car/tire repair: $(WAY TOO MUCH)

= NOT COOL!
But, that's why we listen to Mr. Dave Ramsey and have an emergency fund. I'm just bummed I have to use it...goodbye what I've been saving for several months. :( It could have been so much worse though...like this:

TGIF!
I thought I would provide a little sneak peek (not-so professional photograph) of the chair today. Who knows when I'll get it done though...it's been a slow process! :)
So in just a few hours I'm headed back home to see my sister for the FHS color's day basketball game tonight! I'm super excited and I hope the weather doesn't get in the way of travel plans this weekend. So far today should be fine, but Sunday may be a little difficult getting through Mid-Mo. We woke up to an unexpected light blanket of snow and then skidded our way into a curb trying to get out of the parking lot. Eeek! It's warming up at least now though. I haven't been home since Christmas so I'm looking forward to a weekend with family and friends!

Thursday
So I decided the ol' blog needed a spruce-up yesterday. I'm very ready for spring - this Midwestern, freezing cold winter has lasted long enough! I hate the dry hands and chapped lips, waiting on the car to defrost every morning, having to dress in 5 layers (and not being able to wear half my shoes because they'll be too cold), etc. Maybe this background will help spring to hurry up! :)
I worked on the chair a little more last night...the arms are being a little tricky. I was going to post a sneak peek photo today, but I ran out of time this morning {story of my life it seems like}. I never feel like I have enough time just to chill and get things done at home - Eric came home early from class last night and I barely had enough time to clean the dishes and vacuum up the staples from the chair in the carpet in the office...plus I had about 5 canvases thrown out to dry all across the living room! I've got two canvases to finish before I ship a big box out...hopefully I can get those done by next Monday so the apartment will be picked up and more presentable.
I found this recipe this morning, looks delicious! I may have to try it out soon:

Strawberry Soda Cake
1 - package Strawberry Cake mix (any brand)
1 1/3 cups Strawberry Soda
(strawberry soda is substituted for the amount of water on the cake mix)
2 - 3 Eggs (if you want it lighter and fluffier use three eggs)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 – 2 lbs Fresh Strawberries (Sliced)
Add cake mix to a large mixing bowl. Add egg, oil and strawberry soda. Beat until smooth. Pour into two round cake pans that have been greased and floured. Bake as directed on cake mix or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. When cake is done remove from oven and cool in pans for 15 minutes. Then remove to a wire rack and completely cool. Frost first layer with icing and arrange sliced strawberries on top. Add the second cake layer and frost top and sides with more icing and top with more sliced strawberries. Save one whole strawberry for the middle of the cake. Gently slice and fan the whole strawberry, Place on top in the middle of the cake.
Measurements vary depending on what brand of cake mix you use. Follow the directions on the back of the box substituting strawberry soda for the amount of water listed. Also add the amount of eggs and oil stated on the mix, I use Duncan Hines.
***For my icing, I made a typical cream cheese kind. Cream Cheese, Powdered Sugar and Vanilla!

I'm attempting to get more caught up on the Dave Ramsey series since I only have 9 weeks left to access the website (a huge thanks to Grandpa Art and Grandma Ivah for getting me set up on it!!).Unfortunately, my internet browser likes to give me trouble with the video and I can only watch it on my laptop, so I've been a little slow with it.
I listened to the section this morning on creating a budget - something I wish I started a LONG time ago! Eric and I started creating our own monthly budget right before we got married, and it took us (well, me) several months to get into the swing of it. I was so used to spending basically all my paycheck on eating out, shopping, getting my hair done, etc. Then, if I had a little leftover at the end of a payperiod I would put a little bit into savings. I had a semi-decent amount saved up by the time I graduated, but looking back, I wish I would've disciplined myself to have a little more. So now, here we are as newlyweds living on one income...goodbye $100 hair color appointments, ordering whatever off the menu out at dinner, shopping every few weekends, etc! Definitely a big change, but we're doing well with it. When we did our budget, we actually had calculated my pay at about $50 less than what it actually is so we have a little extra savings each month. And, I transfer money to savings on payday, not later on - definitely helps to just make that money "disappear" before you can spend it. :) Now, if only the economy were better so I could get more interest off of it! Having a strict budget in place definitely makes me think twice before I go spending money.
That's about it for today...I'm ready for an early Valentine's dinner at Olive Garden tonight!

Wedding Wednesday - Rehearsal Dinner
We hosted our rehearsal dinner at Powerhouse Seafood Restaurant in Fayetteville. Personally, I'm not a seafood fan, but they have the best blackened chicken and Caesar salad, plus it's a Fayetteville favorite!
It was so wonderful to have all of our family in town and to get to socialize with them that night! Here are a few photos:
HUGE props to Charise, Aunt Rochelle, Amanda, Lyndsey, Joy and Dreama for helping with the setup and creation of the wonderful invitations and decorations! Look at what a great job they did:
I'll have to post some more pictures of the centerpieces later...the last picture there is of a 4-piece folding box-like thing with semi-transparent pictures - they're just adorable! Mom and I have used a couple of them as decor around the house.

Random Tuesday
I feel like I haven't blogged on here in forever!
Eric's been slaving away with school and I'm hoping that I'm not getting sick with this sore throat I've had for 2 days. It was definitely a "blah Monday" yesterday. The weekend went by quick as usual...I got some painting done and spent several hours ripping up the last of the antique chair. No photos yet because it's still not done, but hopefully those will be up soon!
On the more personal side of things, I had a doctor's appointment last Friday and now I have an endoscopy of my upper stomach scheduled for the end of the month for the stomach pains I get about 4-5 times a month. I've always had a sensitive stomach and have been a picky eater because of it, so it probably was about time I went to see a doctor about it. If I'm ever over at your house though and don't eat all your food, don't take it personally! ;) I wasn't expecting to have to go to the lab to get my blood drawn on Friday, so it's a good thing I was able keep from passing out so I could drive home. So, needless to say, I HATE giving blood samples. If this photo from when I got blood drawn for mono last year doesn't justify that, then I don't know what does.
(If you have a weak stomach, don't look below!)
I had that monster bruise for weeks - took the nurse 3 or 4 times to get the right vein. (*chills*)
We've had some winter weather here the past few days. Of course not as much as the weathermen predicted though (they said 5 inches, we got about 1-1.5). Columbia public schools have been out since Friday at noon though...I'm so jealous. I told Eric this morning that my next career is going to be a school teacher so I can get summers and snow days off. Maybe I should look into art education... ;)
In other news, I'm so excited to be going home in a few weeks to celebrate the birthdays of these lovely ladies!!
We've got Aunt Carolyn coming in from California and Walt, Lorraine, and Nathaniel from Prague...I can't wait!

P.S. - and CONGRATS to Kalyn!!!!

TGIF. Thank goodness!! It's been a not-so-great week filled with some frustration, and I'm SO ready for the weekend (too bad it can't last forever, right?!). Although, we don't have anything in the way of plans besides Friday night date night!...At Sam's Club and maybe the grocery store. (Exciting?)
Oh well - 'tis the life of newlyweds living in a town where we know very few people.
Eric had his resume sent off for a couple of local internships this week. We're crossing our fingers that he can stay in the Mid-Mo area this summer to reduce extra living costs. I've been working on new blog designs for Anna-Marie and Emily, too. Hopefully that will get them into blogging more. ;) I've been slacking on my "Wedding Wednesday" posts - I always forget that I can write a post and have it post at a later time...I think I'll try that for next week!
Not much else to talk about...hopefully I'll have some more pictures of the chair upholstering on Monday, and some canvases, too! I have 6 custom canvases to get done this weekend thanks to an Etsy contact! :)

Weekend Wrap-Up
Another weekend come and gone - I'm jealous of everyone in Arkansas that got either a 3 or 4-day weekend! Thankfully the ice storm wasn't near as bad there as it was last year. I don't think it can get much worse than this:

Friday night we expanded our Columbia cuisine by trying a local Chinese restaurant that was delicious! I think our count of local restaurants that we've tried is up to about 4 or 5. Pathetic considering we've been here 7 months and go out to eat at least once a week. :) We just can't get away from the Ruby Tuesday coupons, McAlisters, and Panera.
Despite the temperatures in the upper 20's, we went out to the park Saturday afternoon for the first time in months. Thankfully the sun was out so it wasn't too unbearable. I downloaded the "Couch to 5K"iPhone app a few weeks ago so we gave it a try. It's a 3 times a week, 9 week program that trains you up to run a full 5K. (It's been YEARS since I've done that, so I'm definitely out of shape!) Our workout Saturday was a 5 minute warmup, and then 20 minutes of alternating 60 second runs with 90 second walks, followed by a 5 minute cooldown. I was able to do it, but I couldn't walk hardly at all yesterday my legs were so sore! Time to hit the gym again tomorrow I guess!
Eric and Clayton picked up the infamous chair on Friday, so I started to rip it apart on Saturday. Eric jumped in immediately and basically took over the whole project. :) After him giving me such a hard time about the thing, he was actually super excited about it.
It took us 3.5 hours with 2 tool sets to rip apart most of the upholstery.
And the smell wasn't too great once we got to the stuffing. Good thing I just got my new vacuum filters in.
Sunday we set out to town to get fabric and a staple gun. With the two of us going we were able to use double coupons so we saved about $25. It took us forever to find the upholstery fabric section at Joann, and then another 10 minutes for me just to pick something out, but I ended up going with a print of slate blues with a hint of gold. Thankfully, they had some weekly ads at the front of the store that we were able to snatch two 40% off coupons from. Then we took off to Michael's to use their weekly coupons (and Hobby Lobby will be hit tonight!).
We got the back and the sides stapled on last night, and as we were flipping the chair around, out flew 3 pens, a guitar pick, a used bandaid (eww!), and 31 cents. Who knows what else we'll find in there this week. A $100 bill would be nice. :)
I painted the legs a mustard yellow, and I'm going back to get some gray fabric to do the other parts of the chair. I need to find some trim or tubing at some point, too. But here's the progress (hopefully it'll be done next weekend!)
And as if that's not enough going on, I've got 7 canvases to do this week, too! I got a huge order over the weekend thanks to Etsy, so I'll have plenty to keep me busy for the next week and a half. Eric also got my chalkboard and antique frame hung over the weekend in our office, too!
And, as if this entry isn't long enough, I found out on Friday that I've been accepted to join the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) blogging team on Healthcare Design Magazine's website. So, beginning in March, I'll have an entry every 4-6 weeks on this website! I'm super excited!
